Abstract

Effective interpersonal relationships depend on a mutuality of attitudes and behaviors concerning both the basis for, and conduct of, the relationship. Implicit in this is that each parts to the relationship possess a sufficient degree of self knowledge and a willingness to share information about emotions, concerns, values and attitudes with others in the relationship. These dimensions, “Known to Self” and “Known to Others,” have been combined in a matrix known as the Johari Window (Luft and Ingham, 1955; Luft, 1969) to characterize the communication process through which individuals give and receive information about themselves.
